Midnight Studio Episode 16 Final Recap

A year has already passed since Ki Joo traveled to the netherworld. Han Bom recalls how she had rejected his idea to go there but Ki Joo had insisted since the black moon only took place every ten days. But Han Bom was certain they could find another way. In the midst of their argument, they get a call from the hospital. Ji won was unconscious due to stress and Seung Hoon is so enraged that he asks permission from Ki Joo to exact revenge on his former boss. Ki Joo promises to take responsibility.

Seung Hoon begins his revenge vendetta, possessing everyone around Mr Kim. He possesses his wife and son, letting him know of how he caused his death. To his shock, Mr Kim doesn’t remember him. He is terrified but refuses to apologize to those he had hurt. (Damn this man!)

Meanwhile, Ji won gets discharged from the hospital. When she gets to work, she’s afraid to face Mr Kim’s wrath but to her surprise, her co-workers congratulate her for securing the orders. The warehouse had eventually given them the goods but Ji won knows this is all Seung Hoon’s doing. However, Ji won notices Mr Kim isn’t at work. Turns out Mr Kim has arrived but he’s almost running crazy due to seeing possessed people around him. Eventually, Seung Hoon possesses his body. He makes him apologize for his wrong doings while wearing a placard over his chest (Totally humiliating)

However, Ji won notices that Seung Hoon possessed Mr Kim. They meet at a secluded place and profess their love to each other.

Han Bom has started taking photos of ghosts. She’s determined to do a good job so Ki Joo wouldn’t find the need to go to the netherworld. After taking pictures for a bunch of dead rude teenage girls, she gets a call from a bar telling her Ki Joo was drunk. She arrives there to get him but he bares his soul to her, explaining he is scared to die but rather than getting scared of the netherworld, he’s more scared of a world where she isn’t there.

Even the next day, she tries to avoid him but Ki Joo pleads with her not to let them part on a bad note. Han Bom finally bends and allows him to go even though she is afraid he might not return.

Ki Joo tells Seung Hoon of his plan to go to the netherworld. Aware of the risk, he tries to dissuade him but Ki Joo is hell bent on what he wants. Ki joo tells him to take good care of Han Bom as she would be vulnerable once he takes away the camera to return it to the netherworld. Seung Hoon promises.

Ki Joo leaves. When he arrives at the tunnel, he remembers when the ghost Buddhist monk told him that the nether world was located at a big tree near the end of the Jang jil tunnel. He enters the path and finds himself being pursued by ghosts who want the camera for themselves.

Meanwhile, Han Bom, Seung Hoon and Ji won who decide to help them get attacked by ghosts in the studio causing them to flee. However, Han Bom decides to distract them in order to safe guard the others since she’s the main focus of the ghosts. Despite Ji Won and Seung Hoon’s protests, she runs off on her own. But the ghosts catch up with her and strangle her. Slowly, Han Bom can feel herself dying.

Meanwhile, Ki Joo finally stumbles into the lair of the Angel of Death and gives him back the camera. However, the angel of death tells him he wouldn’t be able to return to earth without it.

The camera was the only reason his ancestor left the netherworld alive in the first place but Ki Joo decides to take the risk and runs out of the lair. However, the grounds begin to shake. Ki Joo stumbles. He falls and loses consciousness. Just then, the safe zone surrounds Han Bom eliminating the ghosts. The scar on her hand completely fades and she realizes Ki Joo really saved her. However, she and Ji won wait for Ki Joo’s return but when Seung Hoon returns without him, they fear the worst and Han Bom cries, thinking he’s dead.

Fast forward a year later, prosecutor Lee is sentenced fifteen years in prison for his crimes.    Na rae has become a tour guide, a job she was doing before she got married. She genuinely looks very happy now. She coincidentally meets Mi hyeon after his return from Germany. They catch up with each other, both agreeing to remain friends as they part ways. (I’m so happy they didn’t end up together because that would have really done Baek Nam ku a total disservice)

Sung Hoon has become a popular tutor ghost, teaching other ghosts the art of possession and telekinesis.

Ji won has become a deputy at her company and is admired by her peers. She is well known for being the only one to survive the ghost desk skipping the title of manager to becoming deputy. There is no sign of Mr Kim so hopefully, he’s been fired. Ji won and Sung Hoon celebrate her promotion with a cake at their secret spot. Sung Hoon possesses the body of a little girl this time (lmao)

Both are worried about Han Bom who is still waiting patiently for Ki Joo. Meanwhile, Ki Joo just wakes up from his unconsciousness. Surprisingly, the one who wakes him up is Im Yoon hae, one of the little twin boys. He offers to lead him out of the netherworld. (Why is the boy here? Shouldn’t he have gone to heaven or something?)

However, the boy takes him to the gate of the dead, telling him it’s his birthday present. They wave each other goodbye and Ki Joo enters through the light.

Han Bom returns home to find Ki Joo waiting for her. She thinks it’s her imagination but it’s not. Ki Joo hugs her and she realizes that he’s real and cries soulfully, happy that he finally returned. The next day, the two of them spend time together and Ki Joo gives Han Bom the identical pair of shoes to the one she gave him. She thinks it’s a proposal but Ki Joo responds that they still have to date a bit more but in the end, he wants to be with her. Ji Won and Seung Hoon see them, excited that Ki Joo has returned. The four take a picture together to solidate their reunion. In a voice over, Ki Joo talks that since the studio has closed, he has returned to a normal, boring life like most humans but the studio had taught him and all others who chase tomorrow to cherish the present.

The End.
