Lovely Runner Episode 1 Recap

It’s the year 2009, when an eclipse suddenly occured. A young woman Im sol is lying dejectedly on a hospital bed as her mother attends to her. While clipping her toenails, her mother mistakenly cuts her but Im sol doesn’t notice because she can no longer use her legs. This leaves her mother in pain. She mistakenly shatters a glass vase and leaves to find something to clean it up. Im Sol grabs a piece of the broken vase hoping to kill herself with it but she suddenly gets a call. It’s from a k-pop group called Eclipse who is on a radio show. A young man from the group called Sun jae speaks to her, asking if she knows the group but Im Sol shouts rudely that she doesn’t. She takes out her frustration on him, crying as she asks what his group can do to make her walk again. She wails that she wants to die but in a gentle tone, Sun jae tells her to keep on living, thanking her for existing this entire time. Im Sol bursts into tears startling her mother who arrives in that moment and gives her a hug to reassure her.

Fast forward to the year 2023. Sun jae and his group have become highly successful amassing millions of fans. But he seems to have a cold relationship with his other members, even telling his manager he wishes to retire after refusing to film a movie. As for Im sol, she has become a huge fan girl of Sun jae with her entire room filled with images of him. Although lame, she still has a positive attitude. She now works as a freelance editor because she hasn’t been able to secure a full time job. She lives with her mother, her grandmother who had dementia and her older brother Im Geum. Her most treasured item is a watch she brought from Sun jae’s auction for three million won.

It’s Eclipse’s first concert in five years and Im Sol is so excited. Her friend who is driving her to the concert gives her a yearbook from her brother who attended the same school as him. Turned out their schools were so close. It was an all boys school. Im Sol is so happy to see he was still handsome in high school. Her friend reminds her she had a huge crush on someone else before Sung jae but Im sol can hardly remember. Her friend drops her at the concert venue where she joins another friend of hers who is a fan girl. The two squeal excitedly over the concert. But get annoyed after hearing a group of Sun jae’s antis, talking bad about him for planning to leave the group and focus on acting. Im Sol can’t stand people like them for trying to create rumors.

The concert is about to start but Im Sol suddenly gets a call for a job interview. She pleads with her friend to keep her spot but when she arrives there, she is rejected because of her condition since the company has a lot of stairs. Im Sol tries not to let it weigh on her, determined to remain positive but on her way back to the concert, she is stuck in traffic. When she finally arrives, the concert has started but she isn’t allowed to go in. Im Sol pleads with a female staff to let her inside. The woman eventually agrees as long as she has her ticket but Im Sol remembers that her ticket had slipped off from her pocket while she was inside the bus. As a result, she’s left with no other choice but to enjoy the concert from outside. The group, with Sun jae as their lead singer dishes out Sun after Sun eventually ending with a solo Sun of theirs which is so soulful that it brings Im Sol to tears.

The concert ends on a high note but behind the scenes, it’s far from glamorous as one of Sun jae’s member attacks him for trying to retire without letting them know. Everyone seems disappointed in him but Seung jae makes no move to explain himself. He says he just wants to be left alone and they grant him his wish.

Im Sol is leaving the concert when she crashes into someone and her phone screen mistakenly damages. As if that’s not enough, she tries wheeling herself to the bus stop but her wheelchair runs out of battery. Im Sol finds herself stuck during the snow on the side of the street feeling helpless as she replays all the bad luck she has suffered on that day alone. But the last thing she would have expected happens. A black van stops beside her and someone gets out with an umbrella. Im Sol is shocked out of her mind when she sees it’s Sun jae. He places the umbrella over her head. Im Sol can hardly speak, unable to contain her excitement as tears fall down her eyes.

Sun jae asks her why she’s crying and she replies she’s so happy since she’s a fan. Sun Jae can already tell, judging from the sign on her head. He offers to drop her off and Im Sol can’t believe it but unfortunately, her friend drives up to her leaving her no choice but to leave with her. But before parting ways, Sun jae leaves her with his umbrella while she gives him some candy in a bottle. At home, Im Sol thinks what happened is a dream and fawns over the pictures fans took of Sun jae during the concert.

Meanwhile, Sun jae is alone in his hotel room looking dejected as he stands on the balcony. Two female hotel staff are gossiping about Sun Jae’s handsomeness when he suddenly falls into the pool behind them.

Im Sol was asleep when she suddenly recieved numerous texts and videos on her phone of Sun jae fighting for his life after an apparent suicide. Im Sol can’t believe what she’s seeing and struggles to get to the hospital where Sun jae is but on her way, she trips and the watch she always had with her which belonged to Sun jae falls into a pond. Despite herself, she tried to get to the pond, crawling on her hands to reach the watch but it’s too late. Sun jae had died and the news was visible on the huge billboard before her. Im Sol feels like she’s in a trance. This was someone she just saw alive a few hours ago.

However, something strange seems to happen. The watch which had always been dead suddenly flickers to life. When Im Sol grabs it as she cries, time stops and she suddenly finds herself in her high school class room. Im Sol is shocked thinking this is only her imagination, especially when she discovers she can walk again. Her teacher punishes her for sleeping but Im Sol runs away to find Sun jae.

She goes to his school and desperately asks a student for his whereabouts. Soon we see her running to a swimming area where Sun Jae is having a swimming competition. She overcomes her fear of crossing the road and finally arrives at the place where she catches sight of Sun jae who just finished his lap successfully. Im Sol is so delighted to see him alive that she shouts his name and runs to hug him leaving everyone there stunned, especially Sun jae who had never met her before. Im Sol cries telling him she had no idea he was going through a hard time and that she’s sorry. She looks him in the eyes and tells him she loves him before being pulled away by security guards.

Im Sol is thrown out but when she experiences pain in her leg after hitting the ground, it dawns on her that this really isn’t a dream. She then believes she must be in the underworld. If not, there is no reason for her to see Sun Jae who is already dead. She thinks the bridge she’s on just might be the bridge leading to infinite death.

She feels helpless when Sun Jae suddenly approaches her asking if she’s alright. When she sees him, she gets emotional thinking they are both dead. She begs Sun Jae not to cross the bridge and offers to follow him except she’s worried about her mother, grandmother and brother. Her talk leaves him confused. He recognizes the watch with her and tells her he has one identical to hers but Im Sol tells him to have it because it belongs to him. When Sun Jae insists on going, Im Sol suddenly grabs him from behind begging him to stay with her, that they should live together but Sun Jae thinks she’s obsessed with him and in a panic, boards a cab and takes off.

Sun Jae arrives home but can’t stop thinking about his first meeting with Im Sol but shudders when he remembers how she said she loved him. He gets surprised when he sees their watches are alike and resolves to give it back to her.

Im Sol is surprised to see a taxi in the underworld (haha) when she suddenly gets a call. It’s from her mother and she yells at her for ditching school. Im Sol returns to her old home surprised it still looks the same as before it got renovated years later. She sees her mother who looks younger and is scolding her for running away from school. When she sees her grandmother who still remembers her here, she tears up and embraces her.

Im Sol goes to her old room and cries, grateful for this new opportunity. She also realizes that the accident which caused her to lose her legs hadn’t happened yet and that night, she sleeps with her mother and grandmother hoping that she wouldn’t wake up and find it’s all a dream. But the next morning, she feels underwhelmed when she thinks she can’t move her legs but it’s actually her older brother who is lying across from her. When Im Sol sees him, she’s so excited.

Im Sol prepares herself and goes to school but when she sees Sun jae smiling with his friend, she remembers how he dies in the future and tears well up her eyes. It suddenly starts raining and Sun jae spots her as he covers himself in his umbrella. He then heads towards her and covers her just like he did before and asks why she’s crying. (How emotional)

The episode ends.
