In the first episode, we meet the top-tier divorce lawyer Cha Eun-kyung, who just successfully resolved a $150 million lawsuit for her actress client. Next, we meet a new lawyer, Han Yu-ri, who aimed for the corporate law division but landed in the divorce division despite excelling at the prestigious Daejeong Law Firm in the country.
Attorney Jun Eun ho greets her on her initial day. Her confusion about the appointment is clarified by Jun ho who sarcastically assures her that the assignment is indeed correct and she is fortunate to be working with Cha Eun Kyung. Yu ri perceives him as a bit impolite when suddenly, Cha Eun Kyung appears, causing a shift in the atmosphere as everyone reverentially greets her until she reaches her office.
Jung Woo-jin, Eun-kyung’s colleague and head of Divorce Team 2, talks to Cha Eun-kyung in her office, asking her not to dismiss their top new hire. Eun Kyung points out that the lawyers chose to leave voluntarily. It has been discovered that numerous new lawyers have quit because of Eun-kyung’s direct demeanor, however she defends herself by noting that Jung Eun ho has not abandoned them. However, Woo Jin cautions her in order to increase the company’s profits and demonstrate to their CEO who truly holds the power.
Yu ri recalls a time when she disagreed with Eun Kyung during a college lecture. She is hesitant about encountering her once more. At that moment, she sees a furious customer burst into Eun Kyung’s workplace. He is unwilling to split his assets with his divorcing wife, arguing that she only took care of their children at home, but Eun Kyung is indifferent and advises him to deal with the issue alone. The man becomes rude until Jung woo steps in to talk to him privately.
When they meet, Yu ri tells Eun Kyung about the corporate team she wants to work in. Eun Kyung recognises her as the student from college, and Yu ri believes she still harbors resentment due to their argument, but Eun Kyung falsely claims it’s because their boss wants her to demonstrate her abilities in order to test her. Eun-kyung makes a bargain with her: if she wins 10 cases, Eun-kyung will recommend her for a transfer to her boss. She then advises her to roll up her sleeves, purchase a car, and wear a wrist watch, stressing the importance of time in her role as an attorney. Yu-ri’s initial day starts off quickly when Jun Eun ho provides her with numerous case files to review and she is required to participate in her first client appointment.
In her first case, she is dealing with a divorce lawsuit in which her client is alleged to have been unfaithful. Upon first impression, Eun-kyung categorizes him as a cheater and requests Yu-ri to convince him to resolve the matter and close it. Following Yu-ri’s discussion with the client, she discovers that he is opposed to getting a divorce and asserts his innocence by stating that his wife becomes paranoid about everything. He also has his son come forward to serve as a witness. Even though she has doubts, Yu-ri, a new lawyer, hopes that her client is telling the truth. She supports her argument to Eun-kyung by pointing out that the son defended the father, but Eun Kyung clarifies that children are not aware of everything in their parents’ relationship and only perceive what their parents show them. She promises that Yu ri will soon grasp her own arrogance.
Jung woo observes Yu ri’s sad demeanor as she departs, deducing that Eun Kyung must have affected her. He is not shocked.
The day after is Yu-ri’s initial hearing, where she maintains her client’s innocence as she had planned. She claims that the plaintiff is excessively distrustful of her husband’s connections with other people. Nevertheless, she loses her argument when the plaintiff provides proof through screenshots of text messages sent by the defendant. The entire court erupts in anger. Yu-ri is feeling very overwhelmed while Eun-kyung is relishing the whole situation with an air of “I knew this would happen” attitude.
After the trial, Yu ri is assaulted by the wife’s family members with some even accusing her of being the husband’s mistress. Even while she is in the bathroom trying to calm herself, she overhears the wife and the sister gossiping that she may be her husband’s mistress which leaves Yu ri disgusted by them.
Eun Kyung and Yu ri drive back to the office and Yu ri wonders what to do next. Her client arrives and he gets an earful from her for lying, but he still claims to be innocent and comes up with a bizarre excuse for the text messages claimed the S stood for Supper not sex and the C for credit card not condom. When Yu ri tells Eun-kyung, she laughs so hard finding his excuses not only amusing but also suitable to be made a case for in court. Yu ri is appalled as Eun Kyung advises her to let down her shame and do everything in her power to ensure her client win the case even if it means she has to lie. Later, Jeon Eun-ho takes Yu-ri out for dinner on Jung Woo-jin’s advice to prevent her from resigning under Eun-kyung’s pressure. Here, she discloses that she neither likes divorce cases nor Eun-kyung, who had visited her law school for a special lecture. Eun ho thinks to himself that she’s being very uptight and advises her to just follow everything Eun Kyung says. Yu ri asks him if he has never thought for himself and he agrees because he doesn’t want to cause problems. The fun to work is having a good meal after it’s over. Yu ri just thinks to herself that he is shallow. Eun ho offers to eat with her regularly. Yu ri is flustered and thanks him.
During the upcoming trial, Yu-ri effectively manages the situation by presenting proof of the plaintiff’s paranoia through a recording she secretly took in the bathroom. The plaintiff suggests in the recording that Yu-ri is working closely with her husband and implies that she could be his lover. At that moment, Yu-ri provides a written note from her client’s son, strengthening this point of her being a paranoid person.
Yu-ri counters the bribery accusation by suggesting the son may have received money from his father for relocation amid the divorce case, as argued by the plaintiff’s lawyer. After the trial, the woman discloses that her husband had been unfaithful to her since their son was five years old and begs him to end their marriage, but he refuses.
The case is adjourned and while leaving the courtroom, Yu ri asks Eun Kyung why she wanted her to hang on to the case. She replies that the case is worth twenty thousand dollars so they have to win it. But Eun Kyung points out that she suddenly seems reluctant as if she no longer believes her client. Yu ri defends it’s because there was no evidence at the time. Eun kyung advises her to stop acting like a judge but as a lawyer.
Yu ri refuses to get a ride from Eun Kyung preferring to use the bus but on her way, she gets assaulted by the wife’s mother again but this time, stands up for herself threatening to sue her. She also sees the wife crying to her son for betraying her over thirty thousand dollars his father gave to him. However, when the father arrives, the wife accuses her husband and Yu ri of having an affair. But Yu ri yells that she should apologize. The two exchange words until the son yells for them to be quiet, frustrated with his parents. He leaves in anger and the wife cries that Yu ri has no idea how she came to be paranoid. Her husband had been cheating since their son was five years old. She begs him crying to let her go.
That night, as Yu ri heads home, she is unable to stop thinking about that scene. Meanwhile, Eun Kyung arrives home and the first thing she does is check on her daughter who is fast asleep in her room.
It is later disclosed that Yu-ri emerged victorious in the case. When she contacts her client to inform him, his mistress answers the phone, confirming his guilt and the truth of all charges.
The entire group comes together to mark her victory, and Eun Kyung warns her not to become too arrogant after winning her first case, resulting in Jung woo giving her a disapproving look in order to prevent her from spoiling the atmosphere.
However, Yu-ri is disenchanted with her job because she believes she has assisted someone who is morally corrupt. Jung woo is aware of this, but she attempts to conceal it. Nevertheless, he reassures her that initial circumstances can be difficult, but she will eventually become accustomed to them and that Eun Kyung is pleased with her achievements, even though she may not openly show it. While in the taxi, Yu ri listens to Eun kyung on a radio program discussing her joyful marriage and family. After a short period of time, she heads to the workplace, considering quitting her job.
At the same time, Eun-kyung stops by the office to retrieve some documents she left behind.
Yu-ri recalls the 16th floor’s relaxation room, which Eun-ho suggested she go to for some revitalization. Nevertheless, she inadvertently sees Kim Ji-sang, Eun-kyung’s husband, cheating with her secretary, Choi Sa-ra. At the end of the episode, Eun-kyung is also heading to the 16th floor.
The first episode started off well. The combo of the two lead actresses will definitely carry the show. Not just them but the other actors’ characters are likable as well. Let’s see how the second episode turns out.
