Chief Detective Episode 5 Recap

Gamuk, the vegetable seller’s daughter brings Yeong han and the others bad news. Sungchil had been killed. They head to the market to check it out and it turns out it’s true.

However, everyone is afraid to divulge information on who the culprit could be but Gamuk, unafraid tells them she is certain it’s Viper and his gang. In a state of anger, Yeong han and the others fight their way into viper’s den beating everyone who stands in their way, until Yeong han eventually arrives at Viper’s office. The two engage in a brutal fight with Yeong han gaining the upper hand and hitting Viper with a belt tied around his wrist until he looses consciousness.

Viper is arrested and taken to the police station. But when Lee Jung jae learns of it, he sends men to lie that Viper was with them during the attack, leaving Yeong han with no evidence. Superintendent Choi deducts Chief Yu’s salary for two months and fires his men but when Chief Yu privately speaks with him, he takes back his words on the condition that they would no longer investigate the case. But of course, nothing can stop the team.

They gather along with Hyeju and Namin to discuss what to do. Namin is inconsolable after hearing about Sungchil’s death. Yeong han suggests they do an autopsy on Sungchil’s body. It’s the only way they can get evidence to find his murderers. He and Hyeju meet with Sungchil’s grieving grand mother to get permission to conduct the autopsy. She agrees, thanking Yeong han tearfully for trying his best.

The group go to the hospital and the forensic scientist describes that Sungchil’s death was brutal as he was stabbed eight times. But it’s very likely that the preparator would have an injury on their hand due to the force of the stab. After hearing this, Yeong Han recalls that Viper had an injury on his hand.

Sungchil is eventually laid to rest amidst mourning.

One day after returning home from being drenched in the rain, Yeong Han’s landlady shows him his neighbor rigorously praying. Turns out that the village has been influenced by a cult known as the church of black and white. Upon investigation, they discover that the cult is actually a scam, performing fake miracles to mislead their congregation into giving them money. Rattlesnake, viper’s right hand man is an avid follower of the church so they get the cult leader to pretend to give him a mission to ward off his bad luck, by making him retrieve the knife used to kill Sungchil. Yeong han and his men catch Rattlesnake and his friend digging up something in an isolated area. From night to morning, they dig until Yeong han finally finds the knife.

Viper is arrested as soon as he is discharged from the hospital. But the prosecution refuses to release an arrest warrant for him. To add to it all, Viper secretly whispers to Yeong han that he really killed Sungchil. Yeong han is so saddened by his helplessness. That night, he visits Hyeju’s book store but he doesn’t go in until Hyeju sees him while locking up. She brings him inside and Yeong han opens up to her about his pain. Sometimes, he wishes to give up being a police man and just kill all the bad men. For once, he feels stuck unlike when he was used to hunt down car thieves in his village. Hyeju can do nothing but cradle him in her arms with sympathy.

Yeong han learns from his lawyer student neighbor that he can get a warrant from another country to arrest Viper. Yeong han tells this to Captain Yu and the others so they figure out all they have to do is get Viper to commit an international crime. They enlist the help of Steve Jackson, the Korean American soldier from the previous incident.

During a public conference where viper is making a speech, Yeong han and the others storm in and initiate a fight. Just then, Hyeju and Namin call the attention of American soldiers who arrive at the scene to arrest Viper for assaulting an American. Viper can see no American but that’s when Steve Jackson whom he has been beaten up this entire time shows his face. Viper is immediately arrested. Yeong han and the team thank Steve for his help.

Lee Jung Jae who visited Commander Baek to get an illegal military contract to sell contraband goods hears of Viper’s arrest. The situation nearly causes Commander Baek to retract the contract but Lee Jung jae promises to take care of the situation. Unfortunately, it’s difficult for Viper to be released as it’s up to the Americans whether to pardon him or not. Lee Jung jae is surprised when Yeong han suddenly visits. He tells him that a newspaper is ready to release an article about the murder of Sungchil which will no doubt ruin his reputation. To prevent it, he should give up on Viper.

The tactic works and Viper is arrested with a warrant as soon as he is released from the American military prison. Yeong han interrogates him showing him all the evidence to prove his crime. Without Lee Jung jae’s help, he’s done for. The news of Viper and his men’s arrest is spread around. All the market people gather at Sungchil’s grandmother’s residence to apologise for their silence.

Yeong han pays a visit to Sungchil’s grave to tell him that his killers have been brought to justice.

With the help of bums, they steal a truck from Lee Jung Jae’s man. The truck contains several military weapons and contraband goods. Because of this, Commander Baek is sacked from his position and Lee Jung jae finds himself in a dire situation. Yeong han and the others celebrate at a bar but upon leaving, they are met by Lee Jung jae and his men. Lee Jung jae threatens to kill him if he doesn’t work for him but of course, Yeong han chooses death instead.

Yeong han eventually proposes marriage to Hyeju and she agrees. The two get married with the support of their families and loved ones.

The year is now 1960 and people have begun protesting against the corrupt autocratic government. After passing the police exam, Namin joins unit 1 as a police officer and she’s welcomed heartily by Yeonghan and the others. The epilogue shows Chief Yu getting attacked in a dark. His leg is repeatedly stabbed with a knife by unidentified men who leaves him to his fate. The perpetrators turn out to be commander Baek and his men.
