In episode 4, Jeong-woo awakens to a vision of Bo-young and Da-eun, questioning him about his experience as the sole person who was able to mature.
The scene picks up from where we left off, with Sang-cheol attempting to snap Jeong-woo out of it. Jeong-woo informs Sang-cheol that he did not murder Bo-young and Da-eun, and pleads with the officer to apprehend the true culprit.
At that moment, the police arrive and Sang-cheol requests that they send the forensics team into the building. Byeong-moo visits Ha-seol and is surprised to hear that his friend’s body has been discovered. Gu-tak inquires about Jeong-woo’s well-being and requests Ha-seol to come to the station for testimony.
Jae-hee shows up at the location, wanting to see Bo-young but is devastated when Gu-tak confirms that Bo-young’s body was discovered in the manhole. Jae-hee sees Ha-seol and comments that Bo-young would be the same age as her if she were still living. Witnessing Bo-young’s remains being brought to the police station causes her to fall apart and faint.
Sang-cheol brings Jeong-woo to the warehouse and requests him to admit to being responsible for Bo-young’s murder. He assaults Jeong-woo and demands that he admit to the killings, but Jeong-woo maintains his innocence. Byeong-moo grows frustrated and requests that Jeong-woo show respect towards their deceased friend.
Min-soo informs Na-kyeom regarding Bo-young. Dong-min discovers his daughter’s body has been discovered and becomes uneasy. Assemblywoman Ye Young-sil discovers the remains and pays a visit to Bo-young’s residence. Jae-hee attempts to persuade Young-sil to assist in Dong-min’s prison break. Young-sil admits that she is unable to assist her, causing Jae-hee to become even more upset.
At the same time, Ha-seol provides her account of discovering the remains and guiding Jeong-woo to them. Chief Kim Hee-do catches sight of Jeong-woo and becomes angry with him. He warns he will harm Jeong-woo and inquires about the whereabouts of Da-eun’s body. Following his statement, Jeong-woo departs to head home and reflects on the recent progress in the case.
He is optimistic about uncovering evidence that may prove his innocence in the murder of Bo-young. In the meantime, Ha-seol pays a visit to Su-oh in his art studio and informs him about discovering Bo-young’s body with the assistance of Jeong-woo. Su-oh becomes combative and experiences a mental collapse. After experiencing epileptic seizures, he falls down and is transported to the hospital.
Ha-seol is surprised when she sees the painting in the room. In the ambulance, Su-oh informs Ha-seol that Jeong-woo is not guilty. Sang-cheol encounters Gu-tak in his office and inquires whether he had expedited Jeong-woo’s trial without concrete evidence. He inquires if Gu-tak was attempting to assist Jeong-woo in receiving a reduced sentence by prosecuting him as a juvenile.
Gu-tak admits to making every effort to prevent his best friend’s son from serving a 20-year prison sentence. Jeong-woo goes to his bedroom and the storage room to search for any clues to help him recall the events of that night accurately.
In the hospital, Su-oh expresses his anxiety to Ha-seol, revealing that the paintings in his greenhouse conceal hidden secrets. Assemblywoman Young-sil’s spouse, Park Hyeong-sik, who works as Su-oh’s physician, encounters Ha-seol and is surprised by her expertise in medicine. He tells Ha-seol to go home since visiting hours have ended and anticipates Gu-tak’s arrival.
In the meantime, Jeong-woo attempts to remember his actions on the evening of the event prior to experiencing the blackout. He discovers gas station receipts and remembers when he would only buy $10 of gas for joy rides in his car. Jeong-woo hurries to the gas station in search of a clue but gets kicked out by the man. Na-kyeom arrives and invites Jeong-woo to accompany her to Seoul.
Jeong-woo informs Na-kyeom that he will not leave until he locates Da-eun. He defines their relationship and explains they are only friends, requesting Na-kyeom to respect those boundaries. In a high school flashback, Na-kyeom is seen having feelings for Jeong-woo.
Simultaneously, the maid informs Gu-tak that she discovered Su-oh’s sketches in the greenhouse and asserts they were too sinister and gruesome for her taste. Gu-tak burns the paintings and ruins all the painting supplies in Su-oh’s room while he is away. Ha-seol appears at Gu-tak’s residence and mentions she is retrieving some of his art supplies for the hospital.
Gu-tak tells Ha-seol to refrain from treating Su-oh as someone his own age as he has the cognitive abilities of a child. The townspeople attempt to grieve Bo-young’s passing, but Jae-hee insists on being by himself and dismisses them. Simultaneously, Na-kyeom encounters the director of her next movie as well as the CEO of her talent agency. She discusses her personal life with the director and confesses that she is in love with a killer.
Na-kyeom informs the director that she is not concerned about her career being jeopardized if she goes after a criminal. While at the hospital, Dr. Hyeong-sik receives a dangerous message regarding Bo-young’s murder, leading to his feelings of fear and distress.
Later in the evening, the police officers meet up for drinks and Chief Kim talks about the two murder investigations. Sang-cheol observed that the investigation into Jeong-woo’s case was sloppy and hasty, as he was convicted without a blood test being conducted. Dr Hyeong-sik and Gu-tak discuss Su-oh, with the policeman mentioning that Bo-young’s body has been discovered as well.
He attempts to gain further insight into Su-oh’s dream visions depicted in the paintings, but the doctor cannot assist Gu-tak in this matter. Gu-tak observes that Hyeong-sik appears anxious. That evening, the townspeople, including Heung-soo and Choo-ho, talk about how it would be preferable for Jeong-woo to depart from the town.
Ha-seol attempts to protect him but the elders reprimand her. Jung-sook informs Ha-seol that Geum-hee has been preventing the demolition of the location where the murders took place (i.e. the warehouse) for a decade. She also discovers that the children used to engage in play with a tractor that was once kept in the storage building. Ha-seol discovers that a terrifying painting by Su-oh features a tractor covered in blood.
After finishing work, Min-soo requests to spend time with Jeong-woo that evening. Meanwhile, Jin-hyeok continues to remember the text message and becomes anxious as he heads out to meet his wife – Assemblywoman Young-sil. By chance, Sang-cheol and Byeong-moo are informed by the forensics team that Bo-young’s skeletal remains had all clothing intact except for her underwear.
Sang-cheol questions whether she had experienced sexual assault prior to the murder and requests the forensic expert to investigate. Meanwhile, Hyeong-sik is acting out of character during their photoshoot, and Young-sik is quick to pick up on it. In the evening, the villagers arrive at Jeong-woo’s house and request him to depart from the town. He is warned of an attack but remains until Da-eun is located.
Min-soo requests that his father remove the remainder of his friends. Jeong-woo brings Min-soo to the warehouse and inquires if he recalls witnessing Bo-young cry prior to her death. Min-soo claims that Bo-young never shed a tear, regardless of the circumstances she faced. Jeong-woo indicates that her crying on the day she went missing indicated a very serious event had occurred.
Min-soo becomes annoyed by the questions and criticizes Jeong-woo, saying he is unable to move on from the past. He abandons Jeong-woo at the warehouse. Jeong-woo is curious about what made Bo-young cry in the car. That evening, Jae-hee arrives at Gu-tak’s residence and reminds him not to forget they were responsible for Bo-young’s death as the episode concludes.
