Begins Youth Episodes 1-2 Recaps

The beginning starts with a young boy Cein holding a lighter as he watches a house burn to the ground.

Suddenly, we see another boy called Kim Hwan who suddenly started living in the town after coming back from abroad. His father Kim Chang Jin is a wealthy assembly man who is highly regarded and as a result, this gives Kim Hwan a huge edge over the rest of the students at his new school. Although, he doesn’t really like it as all he wants is to be like every normal kid plus he also struggles with feelings of abandonment from his father.

Do Geon is another student who struggles a lot even as a high school kid, working all types of part time jobs to cater for his family since his father got sick. One day, after receiving his salary at a car wash, he and his stubborn yet loyal friend Joo an, go to enjoy themselves. But on their way, they pass by Kim Hwan’s huge house. Driven by their curiosity of how wealthy people live, they climb over the walls to check it out. But Kim Hwan catches them and calls the police. They are scolded and sent away with a warning. However, Dogeon discovers the envelope of money he had been given was suddenly missing. Thinking he lost it while climbing over the wall, Joo an climbs over to get it for him but they are caught once again by Kim Hwan who was planning to ride his bicycle that night.

The police are called again and the two boys try to explain that they climbed the house this time because of Dogeon’s money. But neither the police nor Kim Hwan believe them, thinking they are thieves. This leaves Joo an very resentful of Kim Hwan.

Kim Hwan decides to go back and check. Sure enough, he finds Dogeon’s envelope of money leaving him regretful. When he rushes out to give him his money, he discovers his bike is missing and the only ones he can think responsible are Dogeon and Joo an which is why when he sees Dogeon the next morning at school with a bike resembling his own, he immediately thinks he stole it. The two argue. Joo an spots them and immediately gets into a fight with Kim Hwan. Another senior student, Hosu tries to separate them but he unexpectedly joins in the debacle and their home teacher who witnesses the fight sends them to detention where they are to clean a messy classroom, all except Kim Hwan, due to his father’s influence.

At detention, they meet Cein who is quite nonchalant and totally disregards everything around him. Do Geon and Joo an remember they left the bike outside so they rush and get it. In the process, they meet their junior friends, Haru and Jae ha. The boys end up going to the detention room. They seemingly have a nice time together until their homeroom teacher returns to check on them, surprised to find the two juniors there. He also puts them in detention along with the others.

In the meantime, that day is a parent teacher day where parents check on the welfare of their kids. Kim Hwan’s father is much too busy to attend to him. Dogeon’s mother arrives but when she’s told by the teacher that Dogeon would have to stop all his part time jobs in order to get a scholarship, she isn’t happy about it. Although his mother agrees in front of the teacher, to Dogeon, she wants him to keep up with the part time jobs until she gets a full time job. This doesn’t sit well with Dogeon who only wants to live a normal life.

Joo an’s father who is always drunk surprisingly attends for his son. Hosu’s aunt at the orphanage attends for him which makes him very happy. He meets Haru and his mother who acts strange when he is introduced to them. Hosu describes Haru to his Aunt as someone who is very close to him, his dance partner who had transferred schools just to be with him.

Meanwhile as she’s leaving, Haru’s mother cautions him not to tell Hosu their secret. As for Cein, he seems to have an awkward relationship with his soldier father due to his bad records at school. His father warns him to be good before leaving him with some money which Cein uses to buy lunch for the other boys.

Dogeon finds out that his bicycle has been stolen so everyone helps him to search for it. Joo an finds it at Kim Hwan’s house and calls Dogeon. He arrives there with Jae ha and they get into an argument with Kim Hwan and his secretary who believe the bike is theirs. The secretary even goes as far as insulting their poor parents which leaves Do geon so angry that he eventually leaves with the others.

But Kim Hwan’s real bicycle and camcorder was actually stolen by another group of boys. Cein finds out and when the thieves recognize him as the boy who set his mother on fire, they get scared. Cein takes the bicycle and Camcoder to Kim Hwan, telling him he had mistaken Dogeon’s bike for his own because they looked alike. He tells Kim Hwan they are not what he thinks they are and leaves. Feeling regretful, Kim Hwan returns Dogeon’s bike and his money to him. He apologizes for his misunderstanding and Dogeon easily forgives him.

The two then go out to eat and the next day at school, to the surprise of the boys and their home room teacher, Kim Hwan stands in line with the other boys saying he deserves to be there just like the others. This makes the other boys impressed except for Joo an.

While heading home, Hosu tells Haru he’s an orphan and the woman who came for him was his Aunt at the orphanage. Haru seems to pity him but Hosu tells him not to but he soon notices Haru seems to be hiding something from Hosu when he tells him there’s a shortcut to his house. Seeing Haru’s hesitation to go through, he decides not to prove too much. As they are discussing dance as they head home, Hosu suddenly faints.

We then see Haru in the emergency room covered in blood. His mother comes to see him and there’s something quite mysterious about her..The Aunt from the orphaned family also comes to see Hosu and he tells her he fainted because he thought he saw his mom who abandoned him at an amusement park when he was young. His Aunt comforts him. When he gets discharged, He also tells this to Haru.

Meanwhile, the boys get close after Kim Hwan and Joo an sort out their differences. They soon learn about Cein’s birthday and plan to throw him a surprise party. But because they have no money, they decide to work part time.

Meanwhile, Cein is being reprimanded by the principal who threatens to expel him after hearing rumors that he carries around a knife at school. While he skips school, the boys plan the party. Instead of making Kim Hwan pay for the party’s expense, the boys make him responsible for wasting Cein’s time until they are done preparing the surprise before bringing him to a container they found.

Preparations begin immediately as the boys start working at a warehouse while at the same time battling their own challenges in their respective families. Jae ha is being grounded by his parents for having bad grades at his class.

He struggles to convince his mother to let him go out for his part time job. In the principal’s office, Cein had noticed a picture of his mother in high school receiving a scholarship with a group of students, some of which included Kim Hwan’s Dad. He also notices the same picture in Joo an’s house when he helps his drunk father home. He thinks something isn’t right somewhere.

Meanwhile, Jae ha gets into a huge argument with his mom after he tells her that he’s doing part time because of Cein’s birthday. However, due to Cein’s reputation, she refuses to let him hang out with Cein stressing he’s a bad influence. She is trying to do everything within her power so he can be comfortable in the house and win his father’s affection but Jae ha tells her she’s only doing everything for herself which causes his mother to slap him. Disappointed, Jae ha leaves the house.

When his birthday finally comes, Kim Hwan tries delaying Cein by buying him all types of food. It soon becomes weird that Cein suspects Kim Hwan is interested in him but the other quickly clarifies himself saying he likes women.

Meanwhile, the other boys are being delayed by their boss who refuses to pay them their salaries in order to plan the party so they put pressure on him.

After what seems like ages, Kim Hwan finally receives a call from the others that they are ready. Cein receives a wonderful surprise which makes him very happy. The group also end up celebrating Hosu as well who has never really had a nice birthday party

They all end up spending the night together but Kim Hwan has to leave after his Secretary repeatedly sends him messages worried for his safety. Before leaving, he catches Jae ha painting Cein’s nails to stop him from biting his nails like he always does. He gives the other sleeping boys fond looks before leaving.

But when he returns home, he is confronted by his father who asks him if he’s keeping friends, reminding him that friends are unnecessary in his life
