Chief Detective Episode 4 Recap

Yeong Han is eating in grandma’s shop, enjoying her delicious rice cakes when he notices her adoptive grandson trying to read and write. He also notices the hole in his shoes so he later asks help from Hyeju’s friend Namin and she agrees to teach him.

A young widow complains to the unit 2 officers that her five months old son is missing but Detective Hwang isn’t helpful, saying that they are preoccupied and offering to send her to another agency but Sang sun sees what’s happening and brings her to unit one where the team agree to help her. However, the thing discovered in the mountain were the corpses of orphaned babies found by the military. But the Honam station in charge of the jurisdiction closed the case and buried the babies without investigating. It was very suspicious and the woman who lost her baby fears that he might be one of them given that one of the corpses had six fingers, something her child coincidentally had. However, they try to reassure her, telling her they would investigate.

They split into two, one part consisting of Yeong han and Sang sun and the other two, Gyeong Hwan and Hojeong. Yeong han decides to question Audrey Ko, the owner of the orphanage where the babies come from especially since she immediately buried them claiming it was because they had measles. Immediately, she senses their suspicions of her, she gets annoyed, threatening to report them to their superior.

As they are leaving the orphanage, Sang Sun reveals he’s an orphan to Yeonjun which surprises him. They encounter a little boy trying beside the orphanage building. He refuses to tell them the cause of his tears and when Sang sun gives him money, he rejects it, crying.

Meanwhile, Hojeong and Gyeong Hwan searched for the military surgeon who had handled the babies corpse and the journalist who had written an article on them. Turned out the journalist was in a coma after suffering a tragic accident. They only found out that the military Surgeon had gone to Morang Island after they secretly tortured the information out of a military staff although, they don’t tell the others.

When Chief Yu hears that Audrey Ko is the orphanage owner, he tells them how she was a Japanese supporter during the colonialism era and often brainwashed young children into fighting for Japan until colonialism ended when she fled to the USA only to return with a changed name. This information heightens the group’s suspicions of her.

Meanwhile, Namin has started giving Sungchil lessons but it’s a bit tough teaching him. Yeong Han drops by later at the book shop and encourages him, even surprising him with a new pair of shoes which makes Sungchil’s eyes well up with tears and gratitude.

Yeong han and Sang sun interrogate every possible person that came by the woman’s house but they don’t get any vital information. So they decide to go back to the orphanage and pretend to ask forgiveness from Audrey Ko. She buys their acting and let’s them volunteer in the orphanage. While doing some cleaning, they encounter some kids being led away somewhere by some adults. They ask one of them were they’re off to and he replies it’s Daejin clinic where they were going to get immunized. But the boy is taken away by the other boy they saw crying. Turns out he’s his younger brother. Yeong Han and Sang sun start digging into some burnt trash. Unfortunately, they see the yellow burnt swaddle with a tortoise print that the woman described belonged to her baby among the trash. Unfortunately, they return to her with bad news and she cries sorrowfully.

The men gather their information and Gyeong Hwan reveals that after investigating the missing babies, he discovered that they were all stolen when they were away plus they all had one thing in common in their homes, American cosmetic products. Yeong Han recalls that one of the people who frequented the home of the woman who lost her child was a cosmetic seller but when she was questioned, she had denied knowing anything about the baby. But now, she’s a suspect and that night, Sang Sun and Gyeong Hwan secretly follow her to a gambling den. They let Yeong Han know and they raid the place. Everyone flees, including the cosmetic woman but Yeong han keeps the owner of the gambling den hostage and asks him to do something for them.

That night, the gambling den owner visits the woman’s home and threatens her to give him the money she owed or risk him telling her husband the truth about her being a gambling addict. Unfortunately for her, she’s entering a trap. Driven by desperation to pay off the debt, she steals a baby from a woman’s home unaware that Yeong han and the others are following her. They watch her meet a woman whose face is covered with a shawl. She gives her money and just as the woman’s about to take the child, they pursue her. She escapes in her car but the cosmetic woman is caught and taken to the station where she’s questioned. She reveals that a man at the gambling den came to her with the offer promising to pay her enough money if she kept stealing children for him.

Meanwhile, Hojeong has returned from questioning the military surgeon at Morang island although he suffered terribly from sea sickness. Turns out the babies hadn’t had measles as the orphanage had claimed. They were all disabled and showed signs of immunization. They recall the boy at the orphanage who told them they were getting immunized at Daejin hospital. They meet the doctor there and when they introduce themselves, he suddenly tries to escape but his efforts are futile. He’s arrested and brought to the police station admitting to getting children from the staffs at angels orphanage.

Yeong Han and the others arrest several of the staff at the orphanage upset that they couldn’t find Audrey Ko as she had attended a meeting at the liberation party women’s council. They also find a smelly room where the babies were kept and coal placed under a pipe. The pipe was torn to let a hole out which would suffocate the babies. At the orphanage, they find out one of the staff, Ms Yoon was the one with the scarf who is responsible for abducting the babies but she refuses to sell out Audrey. However, they arrest Audrey and her guard secretary Kim just as they are getting out of the meeting and interrogate the three together. Audrey exonerates herself claiming to be innocent of the charges and that it was all Ms Yoon and secretary Kim doing. They agree with her, making the situation more complicated. Chief Yu informs the others that it would be difficult for the other two to crack since they also worked for Audrey at the pro Japanese orphanage home called Sinkwang.

Unfortunately, Audrey is released from prison by Superintendent Choi based on her influence with the liberation party chair woman who personally arrived at the station to bail her out. This annoys unit one as she demands they be fired. But while she’s leaving, Sang Sun suddenly arrives with the young boy they had seen crying at the orphanage Youngnam.

Along with the chairwoman, they all gather at a meeting room where Youngnam exposes the truth, that Audrey was the one who really killed the babies. He secretly used to watch Ms Yoon feed the ten babies everyday but one certain time, Audrey entered the room fuming after discovering the babies were all disabled, slapping both Ms Yoon and secretary kim..She found them useless and had torn the pipe to suffocate them but got seriously injured in the process. The evidence is the cut on her hand which she covers with a glove.

Adamantly denying the truth, Audrey refuses to remove the glove. But fearing tarnishing her party’s reputation, the chair woman insists she remove it. When she refuses, she forces the glove out of her hand and the scar gets exposed. Chair woman leaves immediately, abandoning Audrey who is in disbelief at what happened and starts cursing at the little boy but Sang sun shields him protectively.

It turned out that the boy Young nam told Sang sun after he had visited him in the orphanage because he had shown his care for his wounds and even revealed he was an orphan who was bullied but learned how to bite anyone who attacked him.

The parents of the babies along with unit 1 officers pray for their dead children at the Buddhist temple. Sang sun bids goodbye to Youngnam and his little brother assuring them both that they would be well taken care of at the new home they would be going to.

One night, Yeong han has a recurring nightmare of when he was a student soldier and was forced to kill a young pregnant woman. When he was unable to, he was beaten by his superior who ended up shooting the woman by himself. Yeong han watched as she fell into a pit filled with dead bodies then he wakes up in a cold sweat.

In the next scene, we see Yeong han strolling at night with Hyeju. He tells her about Audrey’s case and how she was stabbed to death by Ms Yoon in a cell they shared together. He also thanks her for letting Sungchin study at her book store. Hyeju tells him shyly that there’s always space for him. However, they start hearing sounds of whistle signifying curfew. Hyeju starts running with him to hide away from the officers, forgetting she’s with a police man herself. They successfully hide at a narrow space both laughing at the fact that they escaped even though Yeon han is a police officer. Yeong han admits he didn’t say anything because he wanted to be with her. Things get intense and they end up kissing. The episode ends.
