Midnight Studio Episode 9 Recap

Seung Hoon enters the studio while Ki Joo and Han Bom are being romantic but Ki Joo immediately hides her before he can suspect anything. He also manages to send him away. Seung Hoon then meets with Nam ku who is barbecuing meat at the rooftop. Nam ku is too angry to concentrate as all he can think about is his wife’s cheating.

Ki Joo and Han Bom come to the rooftop together and Seung hoon suspects their awkward behavior. He makes them sit separately so that their safe zone doesn’t affect him and Nam Ku. Nam Ku, who is still concerned, asks Seung Hoon the address of the flower shop where he bought flowers for his wife (Nam Ku had asked Seung Hoon to send flowers to his wife on his behalf) Seung Hoon immediately leaves and his cold aura is felt by Ji won who passes him by.

She is hungry and perceives the meat Ki joo and Han Bom are cooking. She comes to the roof top and joins them immediately chastising the two for having so much meat all to themselves. Seung Hoon is surprised to see Ji won, even more surprised that she’s Han Bom’s friend. She teases Ki joo and Han Bom for dating, then makes them sit together. They talk about her job and Ji won mentions a sadistic ghost at her office. Ki Joo is about to mention Seung Hoon when he angrily spills water on him. Ji won then talks about how she’s traumatized over blind dates because someone stood her up before they even met. Seung Hoon pieces the puzzle and realizes that Ji won was his chat buddy and first love. Ki Joo immediately notices.

Meanwhile, Baek Nam ku discovers that his wife’s lover Mi hyeon owns the flower shop. He recalls that Na rae had been taking flower arrangement class and it turns out she was having an affair with Mi hyeon since then. He confirms this by going through their chats on Mi hyeon’s phone where they confirm their love for each other.  In anger, Nam ku smashes a vase on Mi hyeon’s window which scares away his customers.

Ki Joo meets him and stops him from going too far. He gives an excuse to Mi hyeon that he was there to find someone before he takes Nam ku away to have a drink at a park. Nam ku is disappointed in Na rae and doesn’t seem to recognize her since they have been together for eight years. Ki Joo offers to kill Mi hyeon but Nam ku knows that would be a crime so Ki Joo urges him not to turn into an evil spirit like Choi Hoon.

Meanwhile, Han Bom isn’t happy with Ki Joo’s brisk messages and lack of communication. She doesn’t seem to care when her prosecutor friend brings up prosecutor Lee becoming minister as she’s more concerned with Ki joo. However, she’s surprised when the next morning, Ki Joo calls her, telling her he misses her. He asks her to come out planning to take her camping for a date. The two prepare and Han Bom asks after the studio. Turns out Ki Joo had blackmailed Seung Hoon into looking after the studio or else he would tell Ji won she’s his first love. Meanwhile, Seung Hoon does things for Ji won to make her day go easier like possessing people to stop the bus for Her, making her buying coffee easier and doing her report. Ji won is so excited that she thinks it is her lucky day.

Meanwhile, the detective has been staking out Ki Joo’s studio for three days and notices his dynamics of opening his studio at night seems off. His partner suddenly mentions that cats have been getting killed recently, highlighting the fact that there may be a serial killer on the loose. As for Ki Joo and Han Bom, their date goes fairly well. Ki Joo is a poor driver and even after arriving at their destination late, their car breaks down so they have no choice but to set up camp at the side of the road.

The two bicker about their ramen cooking method but in the end, Han Bom concludes that Ki Joo’s half cooked method is tastier. Han Bom teases that he must have cooked for plenty of women but Ki joo says he only cooked for a troublesome twelve year old female ghost. Han Bom reveals she had almost died when she was twelve, in a car accident that killed her parents. Before waking up two months later, her grandmother had prayed fervently, preferring that she was stupid or lame than actually dying. She tries to show him her scar but it suddenly starts raining. They both take shelter but in the process, develop a moment and kiss.

However, back at the studio, the evil spirit, shadow of death attacks Seung Hoon but it’s unable to enter the main studio so instead, it wrecks outside of it. The next morning, Ki Joo wakes and discovers Han Bom isn’t in her tent. As he searches for her, he notices her scribbles on the picnic table which coincidentally resembles that of the young ghost Jang soo. He starts to piece the puzzles as he finds Han Bom taking pictures of the scenery. The two hug and when he asks to see the scar on her hand, he confirms it’s the same as the one on Jang soo. He calls her Jang Soo and Han Bom says that was her childhood pet name. They sit down to talk and Ki Joo tells Han Bom she was the troublesome child ghost from the past. She’s surprised but believes it’s their destiny to meet again. Now they understand why they had a safe zone, because Ki joo had drawn a circle of salt around them to protect her from ghosts. The two are happy to have discovered each other after so many years

Meanwhile,  Han Bom’s former client got released from jail but was killed by an assassin in his apartment. The assassin then made him look like he committed suicide by hanging.

After dropping Han Bom off somewhere, Ki Joo arrives at his studio to see police sorrounding there. Seung Hoon tells him they were attacked by an evil ghost. The detective comes to interrogate him and he doesn’t hide his suspicions of him especially citing that dead cats were found in front of his studio. As he leaves, he warns Ki Joo not to change studios again. However, Ki joo is more concerned about this shadow of death because now that it has reached the studio, it means his time to die is near.

While cleaning up the mess, Ki Joo texts Han Bom that they were robbed and stops her from coming despite her insistence. Nam ku arrives and Seung Hoon cries to him. Nam ku seems to be faring much better now. As the trio prepare for the night, the gate of the dead opens and the man who was killed earlier enters. He cries to them to help them find his murderer and asks for Han Bom. However, Nam ku recognizes him as Kim Yoon Cheol, the vacation home murderer who died in 2019.

Kim Yoon Cheol is taken aback because he only died recently. However, when he is told the year is 2023, he goes berserk and his rage causes commotion in the studio. The trio tries to hold him down but he ends up turning into an evil spirit and running away. Ki Joo gets worried for Han Bom and suggests they find her. Him and Nam ku leave together while Seung Hoon stays behind. Meanwhile, Han Bom gets Ki Joo’s photo she had taken of him after it’s developed. She tries to hang it on the studio wall along with his other ancestors but Seung Hoon appears and prevents her, telling her it’s a funeral picture for Ki Joo who will when he turns thirty five like the rest of his family.

When Ki Joo returns and finds her at the rooftop, he hugs her out of relief but is taken aback when Han Bom suddenly asks if he will die, if he had made her take his funeral photo. Ki Joo is tongue tied.

Epilogue

A desperate Kim Yoon Cheol who had been wandering in the netherworld asks for help in finding his killer, determined not to die. Suddenly, Seo ki wan, Ki Joo’s uncle appears before him.
